Repair or replace

A repair shop that gets the machine running but loses the drive has failed you, however cheap it was. Ask about data before you ask about price.
The repair-versus-replace line usually falls around a third of the replacement cost, but not always. A five-year-old laptop needing a motherboard is finished. The same laptop needing an SSD and more RAM will outrun a new budget machine for a fraction of the money. A decent shop tells you which one you've got, even when the honest answer costs them the sale.
